Saturn and Saturn Cipher Hard Drive Kit
The Saturn Hard Drive Enclosure kit is the most advanced storage solution in the market. It is the first drive enclosure solution that enables any SATA hard drive to connect to computer via USB, Firewire, CardBus/PCMCIA or IDE interface. It is also the first storage solution that allows any SATA or IDE hard drive in form factors of 3.5”, 2.5” and 1.8” to be used as removable drive via the same drive bay. To safeguard the sensitive data stored inside the hard drive, the Saturn drive enclosure also comes with choice of hardware encryption called Saturn Cipher.

Designed with modular concept, the Saturn components are similar to Lego blocks that can be mixed and matched in endless possibilities to meet practically any storage applications. Since all the components are interchangeable, no matter what solution you start with, you can always expand or change by adding the same or different components as needs arise. You can use the Saturn and Saturn Cipher drive enclosure as an external hard drive, as a removable hard drive or as a drive cartridge. You can even mix SATA and IDE hard drive, with or without encryption, into the same drive bay, totally transparent to the user. The design philosophy of the Saturn solution is to enable you to read/write to your hard drive with practically any computing device, both legacy and new systems.

The Saturn enclosure, Saturn Cipher enclosure (hardware encryption version) and drive cradle systems are designed with direct point-to-point connection from the hard drive to enclosure and to cradles for the best reliable positive connection. Constructed in strong aluminum for efficient heat dissipation and long durability, every part in each Saturn enclosure and cradle is precisely machined to achieve the best fit and finish.

The Saturn Cipher Enclosure kit is one of the most advanced hardware based hard drive encryption solutions in the market. You can encrypt SATA hard drive, IDE hard drive (including 2.5" and 1.8" IDE hard drive). It is easy to deploy and implement. There is no software to install and no training is required. Using proven standard encryption algorithms and the special Saturn hardware design, Saturn Cipher offers practically bullet proof protection to your sensitive data stored inside the hard drive.

If you have already invested in the regular Saturn drive kit, you can add the Saturn Cipher solution by just purchasing the Saturn Cipher drive enclosure. The Saturn Cipher drive enclosure will mix in nicely with your existing Saturn drive cradle, share the same Saturn interface cables, power adapter and all other Saturn accessories. You can swap out the regular Saturn drive enclosure with the Saturn Cipher enclosure in the same system via the Saturn drive cradle that is already mounted inside the drive bay. The only difference to use a Saturn Cipher enclosure is the addition of the encryption key that needs to be inserted prior to attaching the drive enclosure to the computer.

The diagram below illustrates the various possible configuration for the Saturn Hard Drive enclosure kit.
There are three types of Saturn Drive Enclosures and two types of Drive Cradles that can all be mixed and match depending on the storage applications. (click on each enclosure and drive cradle image for an enlarged detail view)

Product features

Drive enclosures features

  • Choice of enclosure for SATA / SATA II or IDE hard drive
  • Choice of standard or encryption drive enclosure
  • No drive capacity limitation
  • Drive enclosure can be used as external hard drive with USB 2.0, Firewire, SATA or CardBus/PCMCIA connection (require one of the optional USIB interface cable and power adapter)
  • Drive enclosure can be used as internal removable hard drive or as a hot swap removable data cartridge using optional Saturn USIB drive cradle
  • Saturn Cipher drive enclosure comes with build in encryption electronics for real time data encryption / decryption
  • SATA and IDE hard drive, with or without encryption can be mixed in any system via the same 5 1/4" drive bay
  • 3.5", 2.5" and 1.8" IDE hard drive can all be installed into the same drive enclosure using optional Saturn 2.5" -3.5" converter kit
  • Aluminum housing and frame for efficient heat dissipation and durability
  • No interface cabling between drive and enclosure for reliable connection.
  • No switches or jumpers for switching between external and internal use.

Encryption features (for Saturn Cipher only)

  • Hardware based 64-bit DES, 128-bit or 192-bit TDES full disk encryption
  • High performance - Data is encrypted and decrypted on the fly by a certified cryptographic engine inside an ASIC without taking any CPU resources
  • Encryption / Decryption via a hardware key  , just like using a regular key to open a door.
To enable the encryption and access the drive, simply insert the Cipher key into the keyhole of the Addonics Cipher enclosure prior to turn on the power.
  • Simple to deploy with no training required, no software to install and no password to remember
  • Platform independency - There is no software or driver to install to use Addonics encryption products. As a result, it can be deployed in any systems running any OS. This is important in organization with multi platform computing and legacy systems.
Because of the immense flexibility of the Saturn drive kit, Addonics puts together a number of bundled kits to address only some of the common applications. These various bundled kits consist of different drives enclosures, cradles, USIB interface cables and power adapter. Each kit can be expanded by adding other optional components to meet your various application requirement. You can put together your own kit by ordering the necessary components for your application. The various features described in this web page may require additional Saturn parts, cables or adapters that are not included in these bundled kits. Below are a brief overview of some of common storage applications and the necessary Saturn components required for these different applications:

Security Key management for Saturn Cipher

There is no back door for the Saturn Cipher encrypted hard drive if the key is lost or stolen. To ensure there is a spare key, every Saturn Cipher bundled kit comes with one pair of Addonics Cipher keys. If you are ordering the Saturn Cipher enclosure only the first time, we recommend that you order at least 2 keys. One of these keys should be kept in a safe and secure location and can be sent back to Addonics for duplicating additional keys. If you are down to the last key, be sure to make a back up of all the data stored inside your encrypted hard drive prior to sending the last key to Addonics. Addonics is not responsible for key lost in the mail or retrieval of the data inside the encrypted hard drive.

For organization with large deployment, you may consider managing your own keys by investing into a Addonics Cipher key duplicating system.
