Printable Version Jupiter Hard Drive Kit Overview

Rugged     Shock Protection    Portable     Optional Hardware Encryption eNova X-Wall 128-bit TDES

The Addonics Jupiter drive kit, designed for 2.5” SATA or IDE hard drives,  is the most advanced and complete drive enclosure solution. It comes with all the important features that are required in a portable hard drive – rugged anodized aluminum housing, shock proof, light weight, compact size, and choice of enclosure that includes bullet proof hardware encryption to protect your sensitive data.

The Jupiter or the Jupiter Cipher (the encryption version) drive enclosure incorporates the Addonics USIB connector that enables any 2.5” SATA or IDE hard drive to be used as external hard drive or an internal removable hard drive or both. For external application, the Jupiter enclosure can be connected to any computer via either USB 2.0, eSATA, Firewire, iLink port or CardBus slot. The same Jupiter drive enclosure can also be used as a removable hard drive via an optional drive cradle installed in a desktop, file server or any computing equipment. Utilizing some of the Addonics IO converters, the drive cradle can be converted into a hot swappable drive cartridge system in which the Jupiter drive enclosure can be used like an ordinary tape cassette. The diagram below illustrates all the connection possibilities of the Jupiter drive kit.

In combination with a large assortment of components and accessories, the Jupiter drive kit enables you to build practically any kind of 2.5” SATA or IDE hard drive storage solution you can ever imagine. You can always start with just the components needed for your solution and add more components as your requirement changes or expands. Since the regular Jupiter and the Jupiter Cipher (encryption version) enclosures share the same accessories and drive cradles, you can implement hard drive encryption into your existing Jupiter installation with minimal investment and no changes to your current set up.

  • Can be Used as removable hard drive via a drive cradle installed inside a standard 3.5” drive bay
  • OS supports:
    • USB 2.0/1.1 - DOS, Windows 98SE, Me, 2000, XP, 2003, Mac OS X, Linux Kernel 2.4 and above, Solaris 8 10/00 or later release.
    • Firewire / iLink - Windows 98SE, Me, 2000, XP, 2003, Mac OS 9 and above
    • CardBus/PCMCIA - DOS, Windows NT4(SP6), 98SE, Me, 2000, XP, 2003
    • SATA - DOS, Windows NT4(SP6), 98SE, Me, 2000, XP, 2003, Mac OS X, Linux Kernel 2.4 and above

Encryption features

  • Hardware based 64-bit DES, 128-bit or 192-bit TDES full disk encryption
  • High performance - Data is encrypted and decrypted on the fly by a certified cryptographic engine inside an ASIC without taking any CPU resources
  • Encryption / Decryption via a hardware key  , just like using a regular key to open a door.
To enable the encryption and access the drive, simply insert the Cipher key into the keyhole of the Jupiter Cipher enclosure prior to turn on the power.
  • Simple to deploy with no training required, no software to install and no password to remember
  • Platform independency - There is no software or driver to install to use Addonics encryption products. As a result, it can be deployed in any systems running any OS. This is important in organization with multi platform computing and legacy systems.
  • Addonics hardware encryption is based on the eNova's XO DES/TDES Cryptographic engine that has been certified by NIST, FIPS and CSE. These certificates are available on NIST web links: (http://csrc.nist.gov/cryptval/des/desval.html and http://csrc.nist.gov/cryptval/des/tripledesval.html).

Because of the immense flexibility of the Jupiter drive kit, Addonics puts together a number of bundled kits to address only some of the common applications. These various bundled kits consist of different drives enclosures, cradles, USIB interface cables and power adapter. Each kit can be expanded by adding other optional components to meet your various application requirement. You can put together your own kit by ordering the necessary components for your application. The various features described in this web page may require additional Jupiter parts, cables or adapters that are not included in these bundled kits. Below are a brief overview of some of common storage applications and the necessary Jupiter components required for these different applications:

Security Key management

There is no back door for the Jupiter Cipher encrypted hard drive if the key is lost or stolen. To ensure there is a spare key, every Jupiter Cipher bundled kit comes with one pair of Addonics Cipher keys. If you are ordering the Jupiter Cipher enclosure only the first time, we recommend that you order at least 2 keys. One of these keys should be kept in a safe and secure location and can be sent back to Addonics for duplicating additional keys. If you are down to the last key, be sure to make a back up of all the data stored inside your encrypted hard drive prior to sending the last key to Addonics. Addonics is not responsible for key lost in the mail or retrieval of the data inside the encrypted hard drive.

For organization with large deployment, you may consider managing your own keys by investing into a Addonics Cipher key duplicating system.
