Intros "Combo Hard Drive" Apparatus
By Peter Cohen
(Mac

) -- May 4, 2001 -- Addonics has introduced a "Combo Hard Drive" device
intended for either desktop or mobile use. The apparatus combines the ability
to support USB, FireWire or PCMCIA together in one device, and can also be
installed in a 5 1/4" drive bay on a desktop computer. It's compatible with Mac
OS 9.1 and above, and various flavors of UNIX and Windows, according to
Addonics.
The device itself consists of a 3.5-inch drive enclosure and a desktop drive
cradle that enables it to be used as an internal drive. It also comes with USB,
FireWire or PCMCIA connectivity cables, depending on what you need. The drive
comes with an AC/DC power adapter, software drivers and an installation guide.
Addonics says that the drive apparatus can be put together in less than two
minutes by users without special tools. The enclosure also includes a cooling
fan. The front panel of the enclosure is removable, making it possible for
users to install any standard 3.5-inch IDE drive, including Iomega ZIPs or
Fujitsu MO drives.
The drive is available at prices starting at US$99 for the USB version.
